The passing of a great Lion

It is with a sad heart that we announce the passing of a great Lion, Stu Horton. His energy, compassion, organizational skills and humility will be sorely missed in our club and in our town.
Our heartfelt condolences go to Cate and his children.

Never one to look for the limelight, Stu epitomized the definition of community service.
It is for this reason that, for this year, we are honoring Stu by naming one of our scholarships in his honor and memory.
This year the Stu Horton Memorial Scholarship for Community Service will go to a deserving Bethany high school senior who shows a strong commitment to Community Service.

Arthur Stuart Horton, 84, died at his home on Francis Drive, Bethany on Monday evening, May 8. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 21,1932 to Arthur and Jean MacColl Horton. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Catherine Crowley Horton. Also surviving are his daughter and son-in law Anne and Christopher Magri of Prospect and their daughters Amelia and Matilda and his son and daughter-in-law, John and Deborah Holder Horton of the Bronx, New York and their daughter, Catherine. He is pre-deceased by his brother, Richard Horton. Mr. Horton attended the Haverford School and Princeton University, graduating in the class of 1954. He served in the United States Navy and spent many years in college textbook publishing as a regional and acquisitions editor. He spent the last 30 years of his life in Bethany and since retirement acted as a literacy tutor and was an active member of the Bethany Lions Club. Especially dear to his heart was his role in helping to launch The Heart of Bethany, an organization designed to encourage cooperative civic participation. He also served as an Episcopal churchman at St. Thomas’s Church, New Haven and Christ Church, Bethany. A memorial service to celebrate Mr. Horton’s life is scheduled for Saturday, June 3 at eleven o’clock at Christ Church, Bethany. Memorial contributions may be made to The Clark Memorial Library, 538 Amity Rd., Bethany CT. 06524.
